Best Gaming Laptops Under $1500 Reviewed
#1 Best Graphics Card: MSI GL66
If you’re looking for the best gaming laptop under $1500, the best choice is probably the MSI GL66. Inside this gaming beast, there’s an Nvidia RTX 3070 GPU. Let’s start with looking at how well it performs in your favorite games:
When looking at the RTX 3070 gaming benchmarks, you’ll see all games will run smoothly at ultra settings. Many games will even hit 144 fps, something that is supported by the MSI’s screen. According to benchmarks at UserBenchmark, the RTX 3070 has a 30% higher effective speed than the RTX 3060.
The 15.6-inch IPS display has a maximum brightness of 335 nits, a refresh rate of 144hz, and a contrast ratio of 1320:1. The colors are very accurate for being a gaming laptop; it covers 93% of the sRGB color coverage.
MSI claims the design is thin and made for gamers that want to carry it around all day. With a weight of 4.63 pounds (2,1 kg), it’s fairly light for being a gaming laptop, but it’s far from being an ultraportable. The lid is made of metal, but the rest of the case is made of plastic. It’s sturdy, but the plastic case makes it feel cheaper than if it had a full metal exterior.
With two fans and six heat pipes, the cooling system does a decent job of keeping it cool, but the fan noise is noticeable, and some gamers might find it too loud. If you compare the battery life of the MSI GL66 against the rest of the laptops on the list, it ends up last.
A recently released component in this laptop is the 8-core Intel Core i7 processor. It’s from Intel’s 11th generation, Tiger Lake, and will, when combined with the 16GB DDR4 RAM, provide excellent performance in both games, everyday use, and work. The RAM isn’t soldered, so you can replace it and change it however you like. It’s also possible to add another hard drive if you feel that 512GB is on the smaller side.
Summary: The MSI GL66 has a beautiful 144hz display and top-notch gaming performance. However, the powerful hardware will drain the battery fast, and the fans have to work hard, so be prepared for loud fan noise and having it mostly plugged in. Check it out on Amazon today!
|Nvidia Geforce RTX 3070 GPU||Mostly plastic case|
|Customizable RGB keyboard||Noticeable fan noise|
|11th Gen. Intel Core i7 CPU||Poor battery life|
#2 Best 17-inch Gaming Laptop Under $1500: Sager NP7879PQ
Sager is a smaller laptop brand that focuses on premium laptops. Their new gaming laptop, the NP7879PQ, has the best value of any 17-inch gaming laptop under $1500.
The Sager NP7879PQ has a simple and almost ordinary-looking design. It’s a durable laptop mostly made of plastic. The keyboard backlighting is not adjustable for individual keys, but it’s possible to change the color of the full keyboard.
This laptop has the 11th generation Intel core-11800H CPU. It’s one of the best processors you can get and will handle any programs you throw at it. The Sager NP7879PQ has a 500GB SSD for fast boot and load times.
One of the things that makes this laptop stand out is the high-quality screen. It has vivid colors and a refresh rate of 144hz. The screen works well both for gaming and for content creation. In addition, it covers 100% of the sRBG color coverage, so the colors are accurate enough for media editing.
The biggest thing to watch out for is that it can sometimes run quite hot. Therefore, getting a cooling pad or external laptop cooler is recommended to keep the temperatures down.
Summary: If you’re looking for an affordable 17-inch gaming laptop to run the latest games on ultra settings, I would recommend the Sager NP7879PQ. It’s probably the best 17-inch gaming laptop under $1500 at the moment.
|Awesome screen||Runs hot|
|No bloatware||Average battery life|
#3 Best for Competitive Games: HP Omen 15
If you’re looking for a desktop replacement to run the latest games, then one of the best options is the HP Omen 15. This 15-inch laptop is fast, durable, and will run modern games at ease.
The HP Omen 15 has a subtle look with its lid closed. It’s not until you open the lid that you’ll see that this is a laptop made for gaming. The keyboard has a clear tactile keystroke, and you can adjust the RGB keyboard backlighting in four separate zones. The touchpad is responsive and has two physical buttons.
With a weight of over 5 pounds and a somewhat bulky design, it’s not the most portable option, but it’s nevertheless sturdy and well-designed.
If you play competitive multiplayer games, you’re going to love the 144hz full HD screen. It has a fast response time, vivid colors, and excellent image quality.
This laptop won’t let you down when it comes to gaming performance. It has a 10th Gen Intel Core i7 1075H CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and the Nvidia RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU. As a result, it will run almost all AAA games smoothly on ultra graphics settings. The 256GB SSD is fast, but 256 GB of storage is on the lower side. Luckily you also get a 1TB HDD for extra storage. You can also easily pop off the bottom plate after unscrewing some screws to upgrade the SSD or the RAM.
Even with the demanding hardware, it’s still able to stay cool even after long gaming sessions. Unfortunately, the below-average battery life is the laptop’s weakest point. Expect less than 4 hours of video playback on a full charge.
Summary: The HP Omen is a powerful gaming laptop that will run modern games at ease. Thanks to the excellent keyboard and the fast 144hz screen, it’s an excellent choice for competitive gamers.
|Excellent gaming performance||Heavy|
|Good cooling system||Short battery life|
|Easy to upgrade||Quiet speakers|
#4 Lowest Temperatures: MSI GE75 Raider
Another excellent Nvidia RTX 2070 gaming notebook is the MSI GE75 Raider. If you’re looking for plenty of storage and a fully customizable RGB keyboard, this might be the choice for you!
The first thing you’ll likely notice on the MSI GE75 is the colorful RGB keyboard. You can adjust the color of each key and the keyboard has anti-ghosting technology, which means you can rely on it picking up each keystroke when gaming or writing.
The combination of plastic and metal makes the black case sturdy without flex. With a weight of 5.73 lbs (2,6 kg), it’s on the heavier side for a gaming laptop in the $1500 price range.
Around the laptop, you’ll find vents to help the laptop to stay cool. The fans are quite noisy, especially when gaming, but they do a great job keeping the temperature temperatures down.
This laptop has almost all the ports you’ll need, but the USB Type-C port does not support Thunderbolt 3 and even if it has an SD card reader, it’s quite slow.
MSI has made several improvements to the screen in this 2021 MSI GE75 model. The bezels are now narrower and colors are more accurate than last year’s model. With a 95% sRGB coverage, the screen is more than vivid enough for gaming. Since the screen is an IPS display, it looks good from almost any angle. Just like the rest of the top-rated gaming laptops on the list, it has a refresh rate of 144hz. This means you will be able to fully take advantage of running non-demanding games at 144 fps.
The hardware is quite similar to the laptops on the top of this list. The 10th Generation Intel Core i7-10750H combined with 16GB and a fast SSD makes running demanding programs a breeze. It’s VR-ready thanks to the Nvidia RTX 2070 graphics card but the screen does not support G-Sync.
Summary: The MSI GE75 is a fairly standard RTX 2070 gaming laptop. It has good gaming performance and a beautiful screen, but even if it has an extra 1TB of storage nothing makes it stand out, and that’s why it’s fourth on the list of best gaming laptops under $1500.
|Plenty of storage||Poor battery life|
|Screen with vivid colors||Slow SD card reader|
#6 Longest Battery Life: Asus Dash F15
Asus recently released a gaming beast with an 11th generation Intel Core i7, but there are some things to consider before you go for this laptop.
The Asus Dash F15 is a compact laptop with a weight of 4.41 lbs (2 kg) and a width of just 0.78″ (2 cm). It’s quite lightweight for being a 15-inch gaming notebook. Asus decided not to include a CD/DVD drive and there’s also no webcam or fingerprint reader to keep it slim. The USB-C port on the side does support Thunderbolt and it also has an ethernet port if you want to have it plugged in directly to your router for the best possible internet speed.
The Backlit keyboard has a deep 1.7mm key travel but the keyboard layout leaves a lot to be desired. It has no Numpad, the insert and print screen keys are missing and the enter key is smaller than the right shift key. The arrows are also in my option a bit too small for comfortable gaming.
It has the right hardware to compete with the best. The NVMe SSD is lightning-fast and the Intel Core i7-11370H is a fast CPU from the latest generation of Intel processors. The Nvidia RTX 3060 is also a solid GPU with similar performance to the Nvidia RTX 2070 GPU. The 16GB RAM is soldered to the motherboard so it’s not possible to change it if you ever need to change it.
The thing that makes the Asus Dash F15 stand out is the 76Wh battery. Many gaming laptops have a far smaller, around 50Wh, battery. The larger battery means this laptop will last around 9 hours of web surfing on a full charge.
Summary: If you’re looking for a gaming laptop that is easy to bring with you and has a long battery life, then this might be a perfect choice. Just be aware that the keyboard layout has some quirks and it can run quite hot.
|Sleek and light||Runs hot when gaming|
|Long battery||Weird keyboard layout|
#6 RTX 2070 + 1TB SSD: Acer Predator Triton 300
This laptop has all the specs you’ll need to fully enjoy smooth gaming on the highest graphics settings. It has the same powerful graphics card as the MSI GL65. The Nvidia RTX 2070 GPU combined with the Intel Core i7-10750 CPU and 16GB DDR4 RAM makes for some excellent gaming performance.
The Triton 300 is quite lightweight and has a weight of 4.63 pounds. It has a plastic chassis with an exterior of aluminum. The dark abyssal color and the rounded edges gives the laptop a clean look, but the surface is prone to fingerprints.
You can adjust the RGB of the keyboard in four separate zones. The touchpad is enjoyable but can be a bit sensitive at times.
If you usually play competitive FPS games, you’re going to love the screen. It has a 144hz refresh rate and a 3ms response time. The 15.6″ full HD IPS display has vivid colors and is overall an excellent screen for gaming.
With a 1TB NVMe SSD, you’ll get ample storage space as well as fast load and boot times. Another advantage of this laptop is the ease of upgrades. It’s easy to open it up and install an additional hard drive or adding more RAM.
As with most gaming laptops, there are some issues with battery life and heat management. The battery life is on the shorter side when gaming, and it tends to get hot during longer gaming sessions.
Summary: The Acer Predator Triton 300 has great value for the price. You’ll get a light gaming laptop with fast performance, a solid gaming experience, and a vivid 144hz display. Just be aware that it tends to run hot so you might need a cooling pad or an external fan.
|Lightweight and compact design||Not the best speakers|
|The screen is amazing for gaming||Short battery life when gaming|
|Upgrading it is easy||Runs hot|
#7 Most Portable: Razer Blade Stealth
For some gamers, specs aren’t everything. Perhaps you don’t need the latest graphics card. Maybe you instead want something sturdy, portable, and something that feels amazing to use. If that sounds like you, then check out the Razer Blade Stealth.
Razer has created the perfect hybrid between a powerful traditional gamers laptop and an ultraportable laptop. The Stealth is a 13-inch gaming machine with a weight of 2.84 lbs (1,28 kg). It’s 0.6″ (15mm) thin, so it’s a very light gaming laptop that will be easy to bring with you. The exterior is made of light but durable CNC aluminum that gives it a nice, premium feel.
On the sides of the laptop, you’ll find every port you’ll need. It even comes with a Thunderbolt 3 port. The only thing some will miss is an SD card slot.
The trackpad is one of the better trackpads you’ll find in the top-rated gaming laptops under $1500. Anyone that’s a fan of RGB will love the customizable RGB keyboard, with 16.8 million colors. To save battery, Razer opted for a single color, so you can’t customize the color of each key.
The battery life is one of the highlights of this gaming laptop. On PCWorld’s battery test, it lasted almost 10 hours.
Inside the Razer Blade Stealth, you’ll find 16GB DDR4 RAM and a 512GB SSD. The processor is the Intel Core i7-1065G7. The i7-1065G7 is made to be power efficient while still capable of running demanding applications smoothly. As a result, no matter what you try to run on the Razer Blade Stealth, it runs it surprisingly quietly without any lag.
If you compare the GPU of the Razer Blade Stealth with the RTX 2060, you’ll see some significant performance differences. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 has a 93% higher effective speed than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Max Q in the Razer Blade Stealth.
Even if the 1650 Max Q is a serious downgrade compared to the other laptops, it’s can still run most games with 30+ fps on high-ultra settings, as you can see at the benchmarks at the end of this article.
Summary: The graphics card is a bit weaker than the GPUs of the other gaming laptops on the list. However, if you want a quality lightweight gaming laptop that runs quietly with long battery life, get the Razer Blade Stealth.
|Very light and portable||Gaming performance is worse than other sub-$1500 gaming laptops|
|Quiet||Exterior prone to fingerprints|
|Long battery life||No SD card slot|
#8 Best For The Content Creator: Asus ROG Zephyrus G14
The Asus Rog Zephyrus G14 is light, portable, and sleek. It weighs 3.64 lbs (1,65 kg) and is made of magnesium alloy in a nice gray and white color scheme. The power button above the right side of the keyboard has an inbuilt fingerprint reader. Logging in with your fingerprint is convenient but it can sometimes take a few attempts to login in.
The keyboard has a 1.7mm key travel and n-key rollover. N-key rollover means it will recognize each keypress even when you’re pressing down multiple keys. It’s a comfortable keyboard, good both for gaming and long typing sessions.
This gaming laptop has an excellent IPS display. The colors are vivid and accurate, so it’s a perfect laptop for content creators who do a lot of video and photo editing. The biggest downside to the screen is the below-average brightness, so it’s not suitable enough to use outside on a sunny day.
One of the key things that make the Asus Rog Zephyrus a contender for the best gaming laptop under $1500 is the 3rd generation AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS. Few gaming laptops can compete with the raw power of this processor. It will handle any program you throw at it, no matter if it’s a demanding game like Cyberpunk, an analytical simulation, or 3D rendering. The 1TB SSD which provides ample storage space, will combined with the 16GB RAM, provide lightning-fast performance. The graphics card is the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q. It will run almost all recently released games smoothly on ultra graphics settings but with the release of the Nvidia RTX 3060, you can find better GPUs in the price range.
The long battery will allow you to be productive the whole day. With the laptop configured for the highest possible frame rates, the battery is on par with the rest of the gaming laptops on the list. After gaming for a while, it tends to get hot so you might want to consider a cooling pad or an external fan.
Summary: If you’re looking for a light gaming laptop with a solid screen for both gaming and media editing, then few laptops can beat the Asus Rog Zephyrus G14.
|Powerful CPU||Gets warm when gaming|
|Accurate display||Inaccurate fingerprint reader|
|Good battery life||GPU lags a bit behind|
#9 Largest Storage: Lenovo Legion Y540
If your main priority isn’t the best possible GPU but rather the best overall hardware, then what you’re looking for might be the Lenovo Legion Y540.
This gaming laptop comes with 32GB DDR4 RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 1TB HDD. With 32GB RAM, you can be sure that it will handle serious multitasking and ram-demanding applications such as editing software without any lag. Most gaming laptops don’t even come with a 1TB SSD, but this laptop has 2GB of storage, all the storage you will need. The processor is the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9750H. It’s still one of the better CPUs on the market, but these days you can find processors from the 10th generation with slightly better performance in some of the competition.
Even if the graphics card doesn’t match up to the RTX 2070 and RTX 2060 GPUs of the top options, the included Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 will still provide a smooth gaming experience on older and non-demanding games. If you look at the FPS of the graphics card here, you’ll see it will run most games smoothly but will have some issues with more demanding games on ultra settings.
The display is an IPS screen with wide viewing angles, a refresh rate of 144hz, and a 1920 x 1080 (full HD) resolution. It’s a bright screen that works well outside. The colors are alright for gaming but not accurate enough for professional design work.
With a chassis made mostly of aluminum, holding the Lenovo Legion Y740 gives a durable and premium impression. It has an overall high-quality design, but the webcam placement (bottom of the screen) gives the webcam awkward viewing angles. Another thing to be aware of is that the battery won’t last more than 2-3 hours before you need to charge it.
Summary: With 2TB of storage and 32GB RAM, the Lenovo Legion Y540 has the best storage on the list. The GPU, however, lacks in performance compared to the competition.
|32GB RAM||GPU weaker than the competition|
|1TB SSD and 1TB HDD||Awkward webcam placement|
|144hz display||Poor battery life|
#10 32GB RAM and 120hz Display: MSl GF65
With an impressive 32GB RAM, a fast i7 processor, and a vibrant 120Hz display, the MSI GF65 is a worthy contender as the best gaming laptop under $1500.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 1660 graphics card has slightly worse performance than the RTX 2060 found in many gaming notebooks on the list. However, the FPS you’ll get in gaming with this GPU is still more than acceptable in most games. Scroll down this article and look at the fps you’ll get on the newest games with this GPU.
With a 10th Generation Intel i7 processor and 32GB RAM, it has powerful enough hardware to handle anything you throw at it.
Even if this laptop has a sturdy metal lid and keyboard cover, it weighs just 4.1 pounds (1.9 kg). The keyboard, made by SteelSeries, has smooth, clicky feedback and is perfect for gaming. The trackpad is a weak point, but since this is a gaming laptop, you’re most likely going to use a gaming mouse anyway.
The screen is a Full HD TN panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz. It has fast response time and good brightness. Since it’s an IPS screen, it has good viewing angles. The colors are good enough for gaming but not accurate enough for graphics design work.
The biggest downside of this laptop is that it tends to get quite hot after an hour of gaming. It could be a good idea to get a cooling pad to keep the temperatures down during long gaming sessions.
Summary: The MSI GL65 will let you enjoy the latest games with stable frame rates thanks to the good GPU, but there are laptops with even more powerful graphics cards in the price range.
|32GB DDR4 RAM||Hot under load|
|Feels great to game on||Screen has narrow color coverage|
|1TB NVMe SSD||Sub-par touchpad|
Grab It If It’s Under $1500: Acer Predator Helios 300
The first version of the Acer Predator Helios 300 was released in 2018. Since then, Acer has made updates to it every year. The 2021 model has better hardware and some design changes. The new model weighs around half a pound more than its predecessor and weighs 5.5 pounds (2,5 kg). The lid and the base are made of aluminum, and the thin bezels and the rest of the laptop are made of plastic.
The keyboard is a 4 zone backlit keyboard with see-through concave WASD keys. It’s a solid keyboard, but it feels a bit cramped. On the side of the keyboard, there are USB ports, a MiniDP port, and an HDMI port. It has no SD card reader, and the laptop lacks Thunderbolt 3 support.
This laptop has 16GB RAM, a 512GB SSD, and an Intel Core i7-10750H processor. The graphics card is the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, released for laptops in March 2021. If you look at the gaming benchmarks over at Notebookcheck, you’ll see it’s capable of running almost all modern games at 60+ on high or ultra graphics settings. If you compare the RTX 3060 against the RTX 2070, you’ll see both on user benchmarks and on YouTube videos it has very similar gaming performance.
The 15.6-inch screen has a response time of 3ms and a refresh rate of 144hz. This means it’s ideal for gaming, especially games where you can take advantage of the smoother frame rates and faster response times. The colors are also accurate, and it has a solid contrast ratio of 1220:1.
Summary: The 2021 model of the Acer Predator Helios 300 has excellent gaming performance, a premium design, and an even better screen than last year’s model.
|Fast screen response time||Heavier than last year’s model|
|Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU||Loud fans on turbo mode|
|Sturdy aluminum case||No SD card reader|
The Ultimate Guide To Buying a Gaming Laptop Under $1500
Getting a new gaming laptop can be challenging. I created this guide to help you know what to look for in the best gaming laptop. There are many factors to consider that will make your gaming experience a lot better. Let’s start with the number 1 thing that will have a major impact on your gaming performance.
Pick the right GPU
I have already talked quite a bit about picking the right graphics card in the buying guide of my list of the best gaming laptops under $1000. If you haven’t already, read it to understand why you need to look for a current and dedicated GPU (graphics processing unit) in your next gaming laptop under $1500, or any gaming laptop for that matter.
In this price range, you should get the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card or better. The Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 is a strong GPU that can run most games with high frame rates on high or ultra graphics settings.
Nvidia released the GeForce 30 (30xx) series for notebooks earlier this year (2021) and you can now find gaming laptops with RTX 3060 and RTX 3070 graphics cards for less than $1500.
In some rare cases, you can get a gaming laptop with the Nvidia GeForce 2070 for under $1500, but you might have to sacrifice performance in another part of the notebook in the gaming notebooks.
There are also many gaming laptops with GPUs weaker than the Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060, like the Nvidia 1060. Ignore these as you can get a better GPU for the money.
Get at least 16GB RAM
If you have $1500 to spend, make sure you get a gaming laptop with at least 16GB RAM. Then you can be assured you won’t have any lag even if you run many applications at once or simply have too many tabs open on your web browser.
Intel Core i7-10750H – The standard CPU in the price range
The 10th generation Intel Core i7 10750H is the most common processor in the best gaming laptops under 1500 dollars. It has an impressive CPUmark score of 12696 and will handle any demanding program like a breeze. An alternative to the Intel Core i7 processor is the AMD Ryzen 7 processor. Ryzen processors are often just as strong or even more powerful than the latest Intel Core i7 CPUs when it comes to overall performance.
Get an SSD for super-fast load and boot times
A solid-state drive will help speed up your laptop tremendously. With the right SSD loading programs and games will be near-instant. It also lowers the time it takes for the laptop to start up. Check out the difference an SSD can make on one of the many comparison videos.
A regular hard drive (HDD) is not found in all of the best gaming laptops under $1500. If you want to save lots of files, programs and games make sure you’re on the lookout for a laptop with a large SSD or a laptop with both an SSD and an HDD.
Make sure it’s doesn’t run too hot
A common issue in gaming laptops is overheating. With powerful hardware made for gaming, all cramped in a small laptop chassis, there’s no doubt that it will get warm. If you don’t mind some added noise, you can easily solve it with just around 20 bucks. An external laptop fan, if it gets warm on the sides, can help. And if it’s too hot underneath, a laptop cooling pad is a great solution for hot laptops.
Be aware of short battery life
Almost all gaming laptops have sub-par battery life. Be prepared to compromise on battery life for better gaming performance. So, if you go for a powerful gaming laptop, don’t expect to run demanding games on battery for extended periods. The standard battery life in a gaming laptop is only a few hours of gaming before you need to charge it again.
There are some options when it comes to the display on a laptop for gaming under $1500. The standard is a 1080 x 1920 (Full HD) screen. But you can, in some cases, get a display with 4K resolution (3840×2160) for your next gaming system. If you do a lot of editing work, a 4K screen might be worth it. But for most gamers, it’s not worth it. The fact is, you’ll need a better GPU than the graphics cards for less than $1500 to play games in 4K. At least if you want to play them with reasonable frame rates.
Another factor to consider is the refresh rate of the screen. Most sub $1500 laptop displays have a 60Hz refresh rate. But if you want to play with more than 60 frames per second, consider a screen with a 120Hz or 144Hz refresh rate. This is especially useful if you play time-intensive games and want the smoothest gaming experience possible.
Some gaming laptops for $1500 are VR ready. With a VR ready gaming laptop, you can use the laptop with something like the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive to run virtual reality games. To run VR, you’ll need at least an Nvidia 1060 GPU, an i5 processor or better, and at least 8GB RAM.
Durable and lightweight design
A portable gaming laptop is a must if you are going to bring it with you. Pick a gaming laptop with a durable but lightweight design. Then you can easily bring it with you and don’t have to worry about it breaking.
Many of the best gaming notebooks under $1500 offer impressive, illuminated keyboards with a fast press time and proper key spacing. As a result, typing on a $1500 gaming laptop is often an enjoyable experience. The trackpad is also usually alright, but as a gamer, you’ll most likely use an external mouse anyway.
Most modern gaming laptops lack a CD/DVD drive. This is because most games are played and installed from an online service like Steam.
If you want to have an optical drive, make sure the laptop has it, and if it doesn’t, it’s often easy to install one yourself and doesn’t cost much today.
Choosing the right gaming laptop under $1500 can be hard and time-consuming. That’s why I created this guide where I’ve shown you what to look for and summarized the most powerful gaming laptops you can get today.
The best gaming laptop under $1500 will depend on your needs and preferences:
If you want the most powerful gaming laptop you could get, I would recommend the MSI GL66. It has the best graphics card you can get for the money and a high-quality 144hz screen. If you’re looking for a 17-inch gaming laptop, then the Sager NP7879PQ is a great choice.
