Best budget MSI gaming laptop 2019: MSI GL62M 7RD-1407
If you are on a tight budget but still want to experience the power of an MSI gaming laptop, then the perfect choice is the MSI GL62M 7RD-1407. Here is why:
In this price range, there are very few laptops that can compete with the powerful components inside the MSI GL62M.
The graphics card is the Nvidia GTX 1050. It is a powerful graphics card that can run most current games with ease. Take a look at the frame rates you’ll get with the Nvidia 1050 at the end of this article over at NotebookCheck. Most new demanding games will run fine on medium settings. And non-demanding games like Dota 2, Sims 4 and Overwatch will run fine on Ultra settings.
The combo of a 7th Generation Intel Core i5 quad-core processor (i5-7300HQ), 8GB 2133 Mhz DDR4 RAM and the fast 256GB SSD makes for some excellent speed. Unfortunately, the battery life of 2-3 hours is a bit weak.
Another possible issue to consider is that the 256GB of storage from the SSD is all the memory you’ll get to store files and games. There is a slot for you to install another hard drive. This way you can use both the included SSD and the HDD you bought for a combo of plenty of space to save files and the quickness of the SSD. Another option is to store data on an external hard drive or with a cloud storage service like DropBox or iCloud.
With its sleek, angular lines, and stable chassis it feels and looks just right. The keyboard, designed by SteelSeries, is a pleasure to use. But the matte black texture is prone to fingerprints. The weight is only 6 pounds, so it is a laptop that is easy to bring with you wherever you go.
The MSI GL72 was designed to stay cold. No matter what games or programs you run, it will remain at a low temperature.
Summary: The MSI GL62M is an excellent MSI budget laptop option. The hardware is powerful, but with only around 3 hours per charge, you’ll have to get used to plugging in your new computer for long game sessions.
|Excellent design||Poor battery life|
|Strong gaming performance||Keyboard not backlit|
|Keeps cool even after long periods of gaming||For the price 16GB ram is expected|
Best MSI under $1000: MSI GL62M 7REX-1896US
The MSI GL62M is among one of the best gaming laptops under $1000 you can buy.
It has one of the best graphics cards you can get in the 1000 dollar price range. I’m talking about the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti. This graphics card is 25% stronger than the Nvidia 1050 found in the budget alternative above. The increased performance makes for even better frame rates. You’ll get decent frame rates on high and in some cases even on ultra on well-optimized current PC games. This makes the MSI GL62M a really good deal for less than $1000.
Almost every powerful gaming laptop seems to have issues with poor battery life. The MSI GL62M is no exception. You can only run games around 2-3 hours on a full charge. But a gaming laptop is not built for having long battery life, it’s built for being a portable gaming machine. And on that point, the MSI GL62M deliver.
With a weight of 5.3 pounds (2,4 kg) and a sleek design, it’s light enough to carry. But it’s still a sturdy laptop with good build quality and a nice 15-inch 1920 x 1080 display with vivid colors.
If you want to have 1 terabyte of storage and the speed of a solid state drive, then the MSI GL62M has the perfect combo, You get a 1TB HDD and a 128GB SSD for loading up windows and other programs you want to load up really quickly.
The 7th generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor has an impressive 8865 CPU Mark score. This means it has enough processing power to run any program with ease.
The RAM is also fast but only 8GB is on the lower side for the price. 8GB is enough for gaming but 16GB is often better if you are running lots of programs simultaneously or are going to be running demanding applications like video editing or graphic design software.
Summary: If you have 1000 bucks and are looking for an MSI laptop, then the clear choice is the MSI GL62M. It won’t run all the latest games on ultra. But with an appealing design, a display with vivid colors and packed with powerful hardware you’ll still get some excellent gaming performance for a good price.
|Both 1TB HDD and 128GB SSD||Average battery life (2-3h of gaming)|
|Smooth frame-rates on the latest games||Only 8GB RAM|
|Strongest CPU on the laptop market|
The best mid-range MSI gaming laptop: MSI GP62MVRX
If you want to run the latest games smoothly on ultra (at least most of them). If you want a solid design with an excellent keyboard. And can handle having it plugged in most of the time. Then one of the top options for a mid-range laptop is the MSI GL62MVRX.
The keyboard is designed by SteelSeries, a company known for its quality gaming keyboards. It is a highly customizable keyboard with separate zones for different light and effects. It can easily get flashy as you see in the picture above but you can also tone it down if you want a more professional look. Nevertheless, it’s a comfortable keyboard both for typing and gaming. The build quality of the laptop is solid, and with a weight of 4.8 pounds (~2.2 kg), it’s a fairly lightweight gaming laptop. The chassis, made of black plastic and brushed aluminum, has all the ports you’ll need, but it lacks a CD/DVD drive.
With the great combo of a 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD, you get plenty of storage both for the files you want to store long-term and the files or programs you want to load with lightning speed. The processor is the same as the one in the MSI GL62M above, the Intel Core i7-7700HQ, one of the best processors you can get at the moment.
As with all the MSI laptops on this list, be aware of short battery life. When PCMag tested the battery of the MSI GP62, it had a battery life of 3 hours and 35 minutes. And that was while playing video files. It’s safe to assume it will be even lower when running video games.
Even if you have to plug in the laptop for longer gaming sessions I still highly recommend the MSI GP62MVR. The main reason is the NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics card on the laptop. It’s a potent GPU that provide solid frame rates on ultra settings on most games. Have a look yourself on the benchmarks at the end of this Notebookcheck article.
Summary: With a price well below 1500 dollars and a graphics card that provide awesome gaming performance for the price, the MSI GP62MVRX is the clear mid-range choice on the list of the best MSI gaming laptops.
|Solid gaming performance||Poor battery life|
|Powerful CPU||No DVD-drive|
|Well-designed and stable|
Best high-end MSI gaming laptop 2019: MSI GT75 Titan-055
If you are looking for the best portable gaming experience you can buy, then the best MSI you can get is the MSI GT75 Titan. This is a very high-end option, but if you can afford to pay for the best, it’s a perfect choice.
It has an amazing design with a comfortable fully customizable RBG backlit keyboard. A stunning 120Hz full HD display with 3ms response time. And the hardware you’ll need to play the most demanding current games on 60+ fps on ultra settings.
This 17-inch laptop has a 512GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. This means you get plenty of storage to save all the programs you’ll need on the SSD and plenty of storage to store files on the slower HDD.
With 32GB DDR4 RAM, you have all the memory you need to run any demanding program or game you want. No matter if you run many demanding applications simultaneously or have lots of tabs open on your web browser you can be sure to be free of lag.
If you want to play the latest games at ultra settings on high frame rates, then the MSI GT75 Titan doesn’t disappoint. The included graphics card NVIDIA GTX 1080, has excellent gaming performance. If you look at the gaming benchmarks at the end of this article, you’ll see that this graphics card consistently runs the latest games on smooth FPS on ultra settings.
Gaming laptops are made primarily to run demanding games. So often portability and battery life are suffering. The MSI GT75 is no exception. It’s a bulky gaming beast with a weight of 10 pounds (~4,5 kg). The battery life is terrible compared to multimedia laptops and subpar compared to gaming laptops. If you use it for gaming, expect to only run it for 3 hours at best before you’ll need to charge it.
Summary: The MSI GT75 Titan has everything you need for an amazing gaming experience. But with a very short battery life, be prepared to have it plugged in.
Best MSI workstation 2019: MSI WE73 8SJ
MSI does not only produce some of the best gaming laptops on the market. They also have some excellent mobile workstations. The most affordable is the MSI WE73 8SJ. If you need a powerful but portable workstation laptop for 3d modeling, then the WE73 might be a perfect choice. It runs programs like AutoCAD or SolidWorks with ease.
The WE73 has a graphics card made specifically for professional mobile workstations. With the include NVIDIA Quadro P2000 graphics card, you can enjoy high-end desktop levels of performance on one of the best MSI workstation laptops 2019.
The 8th generation Intel Core i7-8750H will run any modeling program with ease and can run complex simulations without any freezes or delays.
The RAM is from the latest generation of RAM, DDR4. With 16GB RAM you can run multiple demanding applications simultaneously without lag. It’s also great when you are doing research and have lots of tabs open on your web browser.
The storage solution in the MSI WE73 is a 256GB solid-state drive. It allows for some excellent boot times. It usually takes less than 5 seconds from the point you turn it on to being ready to use windows. 256GB storage is on the lower side, but you can always buy an additional SSD since it’s straightforward to upgrade this laptop.
The display is a full HD 120Hz display with vivid and accurate colors. It’s a solid screen that covers 94% of the NTSC color gamut, but it’s a bit dimmer than other workstations.
As for the design, it’s what you usually see in mobile workstations. It’s large and bulky with a black aluminum lid. The build quality is excellent, however, at 5.95 pounds it’s a bit heavy but still light enough to easily bring with you no matter where you travel. There’s no optical drive included, however, it does come with all the ports you might need such as Thunderbolt 3, USB3.1 Type-C Gen1, and an SD card reader.
The battery life is weak. So be prepared to have it plugged in most of the time.
Summary: The MSI WE73 is one of the best mobile workstations on the market. If you don’t need monster specs but still want a workstation that will run all the graphics design programs you’ll need on a day-to-day basis with ease then this is an excellent workstation to go for.
