Best gaming laptop under 1000 2016
Today I’m going to show you the best gaming laptops under 1000. As of September 2017 LaptopBlogger has analyzed nearly every available gaming laptop under 1000 on the market.

In this guide you will find affordable gaming laptops that offer impressive graphics that handle the latest games, smooth frame rates and excellent audio.

The best part? All that without worrying about lag and heating problems.

So without further ado, here are the best gaming laptops under $1000:

Note: A gaming laptop under 1000 will give you a good gaming performance. But if you want to play on 60 fps on ultra settings, the laptops in this list simply isn’t enough. Then you might need to consider a gaming laptop under 1500. If you, on the other hand, just want to play non-demanding games, a gaming laptop under 500 will be plenty enough for you.

#1 Best gaming laptop under 1000: Asus FX502VM with GTX 1060 for under $1000!

If you are reading this, you might still have a chance to make a great laptop deal. The Asus FX502VM is currently available for under $1000. This means you can get a laptop with the NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics card for less than 1000 bucks.

The NVidia GTX 1060 perform flawlessly on ultra settings in most modern games and is the standard graphics card in the best gaming laptops under $1500. Take a look, yourself at the fps you get in some of the latest games at the end of this article. The 1060 is a lot stronger than the next best graphics card you can get in this price range, the Nvidia GTX 1050Ti (61% stronger).

So, getting this laptop in this price range should be a no-brainer. But there are some things you need to consider:

The build quality is great and the laptop is very light and thin (1″ or 23,5 mm). This means that the Asus FX502VM is easy to bring with you wherever you go due to its great portability. Unfortunately, this also means that it can get quite hot.

The Intel Core i5-6300HQ is not as powerful as many of the processors on this list but still has a respectable 6017 CPU Mark score. This means it is still good enough to play your favorite games, but even if it says it is VR ready, the weak processor will make it hard to run VR with this laptop.

The fast 16 GB ram and the 1 TB hard drive is a nice addition. But unlike some of the other laptops you can get in the price range, there is no SSD. A solid state drive will make loading and running games a breeze and even if you can buy one and add yourself, it is nice to have one directly in your next gaming laptop.

Summary: The hardware is not as good as on some of the other laptops on this list. But the impressive graphics make the Asus FX502VM our winner. This is definitely not the best GTX 1060 laptop around, but it is for sure the best deal on a 1060 laptop around.

#2 The runner-up: Acer Aspire VX5-591G

The Acer Aspire VX5-591G has everything you need to look for in a gaming laptop. Fast memory, sharp graphics, and a quality design.

With an aggressive design with red lines, large fan exhausts and a sturdy silver plastic hinge, you know that this is a machine made for gaming. The red-backlit keyboard feels great and is well laid out. The big issue with it is that fingerprints show up quite quickly. The speakers have a decent sound, and the 1080HD screen is high quality providing clear images with accurate color.

The hardware has everything you need for gaming and then some. 16 GB DDR4 ram from the latest generation of ram running at 2133 Mhz. The recently released (7th gen), Intel Core i7-7700HQ. A CPU with almost a 9000 CPU Mark score, one of the best processors on the market that will run anything you throw at it. And a 256GB solid state drive for that super fast boot and load.

Unfortunately, there’s no HDD, so all the included memory is the 256GB from the SSD. But you can always buy external storage.

Even if there are some minor flaws, what matters in a gaming laptop is the graphics card. On that point the Acer deliver. Backed by the Nvidia GTX 1050Ti, the computer can run all the latest games with solid fps on medium- high settings. Instead of just saying that just check out the benchmark for some of the most popular games over at Notebookcheck. These gaming benchmarks are some of the best you can get on any laptop for under 1000 dollars, and that is what makes the  Acer Aspire VX5-591G our runner-up on the list of the best gaming laptop under 1000.

Summary: Everything you need in a gaming laptop. Quality design, fast, durable and a solid graphics card. Plays the latest graphics smoothly on nice settings but with only 256GB storage, you might need to buy additional storage if you want to save a lot of files on it.

#3 Unexpected gaming power: Lenovo Legion Y520

Lenovo is a brand mostly known for their affordable multimedia laptops. But with the Lenovo Legion Y520, they showed they could compete with the big gaming brands for the best gaming laptop for under 1000 dollars.

The design of the Lenovo Legion Y520 is sleek and stylish. Compared to other laptops in this price range, the chassis is made entirely of plastic and lacks any aluminum details. The build quality is excellent but the all black exterior is prone to fingerprints. The red backlit keyboard is a pleasure to type with.  Many gaming laptops do not include an optical drive and the Lenovo Legion Y520 is no exception to that.

The IPS display is decent. It has good viewing angles but it does not support G-Sync and the colors are a bit dull. The colors of the screen only cover 68 percent of the SRGB color gamut.

The CPU of the Y520 is the Intel Core i5-7300HQ. Don’t let the five in i5 fool you, it is still a very powerful processor and is only 4% slower than the strong i7 processor in the Acer. 8GB of ram is plenty enough for your everyday gaming needs, but in this price range, you would almost expect 16GB ram. Fortunately, there are slots so you can always add more ram if you want to.

With hybrid storage, in other words, both a Solid State Drive and a mechanical hard drive, you can save a  lot of files on the 1TB HDD and boot windows quickly with the SSD. And the SSD is really fast with 2649 MB/s read and 1392 MB/s write. Lastly, what makes the great gaming performance of the Y520 is the Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti graphics card. It is the same graphics card as in the Acer, so you know what amazing frame rates you can get with this card, all for less than $1000.

Summary: The Lenovo Legion Y520 has some excellent gaming performance but the exterior is prone to fingerprints and the hardware is slightly weaker than the first 2 laptops. That is why the Lenovo Legion Y520 is third on this list.

#4 Best MSI for less than 1000: MSI GL62M 7RE-623

MSI produce some of the best gaming laptops around. And this time, the MSI GL62M with the Nvidia 1050 Ti graphics card is the best MSI you can get for under 1000 bucks.

Usually, the design of MSI laptops is flashy with a colorful keyboard. But this time MSI opted for a more clean design with only a red stripe at the back as a hint that this is a gaming powerhouse.

The keyboard feels good and is well laid out but lacks backlighting, so when you play in the night with dim lighting, it might be a bit harder to see what keys you are pressing.

The matte IPS screen is a good but with weak contrast. The GL62M has most ports you need but lacks a USB 3.1 port.

You probably know by now, that with the graphics card included in the MSI GL62M, the Nvidia GTX 1050 TI,  you can play many games smoothly at Ultra or at least on high settings (benchmarks). Inside the MSI GL62M, you will also find 8GB DDR4 ram and a 1TB HDD. The CPU is the same as in the Acer, the Intel Core i7-7700HQ. In other words, the strongest processor you can get in any gaming laptop in this price range.

Summary: It’s a shame MSI saved on the design by not including a backlit keyboard or a USB 3.1 port. But the hardware is among the best you can get for the price so even if it lacks an SSD, you can trust MSI that you will get some excellent gaming performance with this laptop.

#5 The internet forum favorite: Prostar Clevo N850HK1

Prostar Clevo notebook for gaming

If you ask on forums what the best gaming laptop under 1000 dollars is, often someone will mention the Clevo N850HK1. They have a good point, it is a really nice gaming laptop for the price. But it’s definitely not the best, but a laptop at least worth considering.

If you haven’t heard of Prostar I don’t blame you. They are a company building high-end laptops, with good prices and good customer service.

The black plastic chassis feels sturdy and the keyboard with good key spacing feels nice to use. The keyboard has 3 separate zones to pick colors from a wide RGB color palette. For the price, the laptops 1920×1080 IPS screen is an all-around solid display.

The SSD makes loading the windows 10 OS quick and you also get some space to install a game or two for extra fast load times. The HDD is 1TB but it is a Sata2 HDD, not a Sata3 HDD, the expected standard in this price range. This means that the rotation speed is only 5400 rotations per minute, so it is quite slow. 8GB ram is also on the lowers side. However, with the Nvidia 1050 Ti graphics card and the Intel Core i7-7700HQ, there’s no doubt you will get some excellent gaming performance.

Summary: A nice gaming laptop with a great graphics card, a solid IPS screen, and a nice processor but a bit slow hard drives.

#6 Best NVidia GTX 1050 gaming notebook: Gigabyte Sabre 15G-KB3

Gigabyte is a company known for their motherboards and other high-quality computer components. They recently released a gaming laptop for less than $1000 with some excellent gaming performance with the powerful Nvidia GeForce 1050 GPU. And an attractive design to top it off.

The Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card is a huge improvement from the old standard in this price range the GTX 960m. The user benchmarks show that the Nvidia GTX 1050 is 41% stronger than the Nvidia GTX 960m. If you compare it to other strong graphics card found in this price range, you’ll  find out it is about 23% weaker than the 1050Ti found on the #2. If you compare it to the GTX 1060 found at the first spot, you will find an even more considerable difference in effective speed (about 100%).

But do not let that put you off. If you look at the benchmarks at the end of this article over at Notebookcheck, you will see that it will still run many games at good frame rates. You might not run the most demanding on ultra smoothly, but if you play mostly nondemanding games or if you are fine with playing most games with 60+ fps on high settings instead of ultra, then there are still some solid reasons to go for the Gigabyte Sabre.

The design is pretty ordinary, with a matte black case, but the build quality is solid and the keyboard is excellent. The backlit keyboard is a pleasure both for typing and gaming.

The battery life will last around 4 hours of standard usage, but if you do some gaming, you better bring a power adapter with you, because then you need to find an outlet way sooner than that.

The ram memory is the latest generation, DDR4. That means the 2133 Mhz 16GB is as fast as it can be. The CPU is the i7-7700HQ, same model as the one in the Acer VX5. In other words, one of the best processors you can get in any gaming laptop today. This combined with the fast 7200rpm HDD and the 256GB SSD, makes the Gigabyte Sabre fast and can run any program smoothly. And it is that that makes the Acer Sabre 15G-KB3 the #3 on our list.

Summary: The graphics card might not be the best you can get in this price range, but if you are fine with playing on high with 60+ fps instead on ultra, and want a super fast laptop, then this is the choice for you.

#7 For the Solid State Drive fans: Dell Inspiron i5577

dell

Included SSD, a potent graphics card, a powerful processor and a saving of $200, what more can you ask for? The Dell Inspiron i5577 gives a deal that is hard to beat.

The Inspiron i5577 is a light-weight gaming laptop with a modest and professional look. It has a sturdy matte black plastic housing, diamond curved edges, and red details. The palm rest has a slide-resistant coating that feels great. The screen provides crisp, vibrant graphics. I would say the screen is one of the best full HD laptop screens on the market currently. The speakers sound good but are not the computer’s strongest point. A strong mid and high-frequency range but the bass of the speaker is slightly lacking.

Inside is the Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card. This card does continuously play smoothly no matter if you play the latest AAA title or just want to play some online games. At least on medium-high settings. (as you can see on the benchmarks at the end of this article) The Ram memory is 16 GB of the latest generation in ram memory, DDR4.

The main thing that makes this laptop stand out is the 512GB SSD. With this much memory, you can store a lot of files and program and always have quick access to them with the help of the solid state drive. Unfortunately, there is no included HDD so for some people that like to install a lot of programs and store a lot of files, the rather small amount of memory could be an issue. But if you are fine with 512GB of storage and you love the speed of the SSD then you will love the Dell Inspiron i5577.

Summary: The graphics card is not the strongest you can find in this price range but the 512 GB Solid State Drive makes the Dell Inspiron i5577 our #7 on the list of the best gaming laptops for less than $1000.

#8 Ultra HD resolution under 1000(!): Dell Inspiron i7559-3762GRY

dell gaming laptop under 1000Yes, it is true. There is finally a gaming laptop with an Ultra HD display available for under 1000. The screen is not perfect. It could have been a bit brighter, but when you use it, you notice something. It is miles ahead of ordinary 1080p screens.
The excellent screen is just one of the many great things about the Dell Inspiron i7559-3762GRY.

The design reminds of the other Dell in our lists modest and professional look. In fact, this is the same laptop but with a better screen and stronger hardware.

The graphics card is the standard if you want to have the best in this price range, the GTX 960M with 4GB dedicated memory for gaming. The included SSD is mostly used to speed things up. The combination of the solid i7-6300 quad-core processor, the SSD, and the 8GB fast (2133mhz) ram makes this laptop blazing fast for the money.

I don’t personally think Amazon can keep the price for a laptop like this under 1000 for very long. So don’t hesitate, buy it on Amazon today to buy a 4K gaming laptop for a bargain price.

Summary:

Don’t expect to play demanding titles in 4k resolution on high settings (you need to spend considerably more than 1000 for that). However, just having a UHD screen and solid hardware for the price is plenty enough to make the Dell Inspiron i7559-3762GRY as our #8.

  1. I am looking at Gaming under $1000 closer to Christmas. What do you think we will see six months from no (May 2017)? More selection in the NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics + Intel i7?

    • Seems about right. But we will see in 6 months. One thing is for sure though, the best laptops for under $1000 will be found right here on this list. 🙂

    • Depends. Will you have use of the Ultra HD Display? In other words, will you have use of a better screen for watching FHD movies, doing work where a higher resulution is better or use it for the few games you can utilize the screen in (as already written, most games require a better graphics card to run in Ultra HD on nice settings). If you answered yes, on any of these things then, yes go for it. If, you on the other hand don’t care that much about the screen and more about how good demanding games look and run, then go for one of the laptops with a 1050 chip or better.

  2. Hey bro
It is a awsm list and the most helpful list I found I had wasted a lot of time on finding the best laptop to buy but this list had made me sure about buying a good laptop under 1000$ thanks a lot and I hope u would understand my bad English and again thanks a lot.

  3. Great list Alexander. Very easy to follow although I’m a bit confused as to whether to place more value on 7th generation i7 vs a slightly worse video card (the 940 or 950).

Amazon has the 3 following i7 laptops which all use Intel’s 7th generation chip:

    1. Acer Aspire E 15, 15.6 Full HD, 7th Gen Intel Core i7, NVIDIA 940MX, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, Windows 10, E5-575G-75MD -$699 on Amazon

    2. MSI GL62 7QF-1660 15.6″ Performance Gaming Laptop Core i7-7700HQ GTX 960M 8GB 1TB – $799 on Amazon

    3. Acer Aspire F 15, 15.6 Full HD, 7th Gen Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GTX 950M, 12GB DDR4, 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD, Win 10, F5-573G-77BJ -$849 on Amazon

For choice #1 is having the newer gen i7 with a 940mx better than having a 6th gen i7 with the 960M?

How do these newer i7 laptops compare with the options on your list which are mostly 6th generation?

    Thanks.

    • Don’t go for a better CPU and worse GPU if you want to use your laptop for gaming. The GPU will be the critical factor that decides what games you will be able to play and how smoothly they will run. That is why on the list, one of the main factors that grant a laptop a good spot is the power of the laptops graphics card. Most games will go from running smoothly at high settings with the 960M to running acceptably on medium settings with a 940MX. Sure, if you only want to play not so demanding games, like online games (Dota, Overwatch, etc.) then a 940MX might be the way to go. But then 699 would be a too high price to pay. I am about to write an article about the best gaming laptops under 500, and I can already now reveal that the best gaming laptop under 500 will have a 940MX as it’s GPU.

    • Agree, but the one you have as a link with the GTX965M is not the best HP CUK out there. I’m about to update the post. It will feature a brand new, really powerful HP CUK at the top.

  4. please tell me dell Ultra HD resolution Dell Inspiron i7559-3762GRY 4k game supported with gtx 960 4gb dedicated graphics card yes or no, if no then who is required graphics card 4k game thanks

  5. nice selection with the ROG laptops! they have hot designs and their performance are top grade. that gl552 and 752 series prices became cheaper also becoz of the release of gtx10 series or pascal notebooks.

  6. Hello, thank you for the great review. I was wondering which laptop 17,3 inches ,around 1000 $, is the best for gaming & work. (GE72VR Apache Pro-009 this one is amazing but hope his price to go down on Black Friday / What about the ASUS ROG series, i really want to pick a good laptop for the next 3-4 years, but my knowledge is a bit low .. And is there a huge difference between 15,6 and 17,3 inches? (Because this dell inspiron 7559 is looking quite good for his price.) And the last thing is about the cooling system because my laptop is getting really too hot in a 2-3 gaming session. Hope you can help me. ( I believe in your opinion 😀 )

    Thanks in advance.

    • The best gaming laptop around 1000 is the Asus Rog GL752VW / GL552VW, the number 1 on this list. But if you want to use it a lot for work and think the ROG GL series has a too flashy look, you can always go for one of the other laptops in the list. The Dell Inspiron i17559 is a really great deal for the price. The difference between 15.6 and 17.3 inches depends on the person. Personally, I don’t think the difference is that big.

As with heating, that is almost always a problem with gaming laptops. They will be hot after a long intense gaming session. The laptops in the list do not have any major heating issues but as with any gaming laptop they may be hot after much gaming. A solution to this is to take a break after the long period of gaming to let it cool down or buy a laptop cooling pad or similar gadget to cool down your notebook.

PS. A Black Friday discount on the GE72VR or pretty much any one of the Best gaming laptops around 1500 would be awesome. If there are any nice laptop deals on Black Friday you will find them here at LaptopBlogger. So make sure you come over here when you are ready to buy your next laptop. If you decide to buy it by clicking on any of the links on our site I get a small commission that will help myself and the site to continue improving. 🙂

  7. I know you said that the Asus K501UX is a bit weak in comparison to the other gaming laptops that you have listed here.

I would like to differ a bit. Remember that the Asus K501UX comes with 2.5 GHz Skylake (sixth-generation) Intel Core i7-6500U processor that can be boosted to 3.1 GHz on Turbo and an 8GB RAM. I have used the laptop and found it to perform highly at high settings without lags.

Besides that, I find your list really comprehensive and nice. Continue the good work.

    • The K501UX is a great laptop indeed (why else would it be on the list 😉 ). The reason it is last is the GTX 950M, the weakest GPU on the list. All the other notebooks in the list have the superior Nvidia GTX 960M graphic card. When you will use your notebook a lot for gaming, then a good graphics card should be a top priority.

  8. Hi,just one question, i noticed that asus rog has a gtx 960m but with only 2gb of vram while other competitors have the 4gb version, does this difference not affect the gaming performance?
ps:i would like to play at good settings with some games like battlefield 1 fifa 17 and civ 6
thanks in advance and sorry for some potentially language issuses, im not a native speaker

    • No, that won’t affect gaming performance. The additional 2 GB vram is only used on really demanding games on high-ultra settings. And those games will not play smoothly on a gaming laptop under 1000. So as long as you have a GTX 960M in this price range you should be fine no matter vram size.

The ROG will play Battlefield 1 at slightly over 30 frames per second on high and ultra and 60+ fps on medium settings. It will run Fifa 17 smooth on any settings and it should run civ 6 on medium-high decently but there are no benchmarks out yet for that game.

Ps. No worries, your English is fine. Thanks for the comment. 🙂

  9. Hey Alexander,

This is an amazing and well researched piece of resource you have provided. I came to know very best laptops in my budget. Thank you.

    • It is currently (September 2016) the best gaming laptop for less than 1000 you can get. You will play most modern games smoothly on at least medium to high settings. Some even on ultra, see the links in the article. If you want something even more powerful check out the article about laptops under 1500.

  10. I’d love to buy an Alienware, especially with screen 15. Unfortunately in Brazil do not sell, and when we find the prices are well above the average of which are sold on Amazon. The more great reviews. Att. Holanda

  11. Thank you for the list, I’ve been thinking about getting a desktop but my parents are divorced so i’m traveling between their houses a lot. Then I decided a gaming laptop would be good and I stumbled upon this site while searching the web, right now i have decided on the Acer V17 Nitro! Thanks 😛

  12. Hey great list Alexander,
I can see that you have researched a lot for this article because I purchased new gaming laptop last month and I shortlisted few gaming laptops in same budget. Most of them are present here. By the way, I am owner at authorized Dell service center in San Francisco. 🙂

  13. Helpful information. Fortunate me I found your website by accident, and I’m shocked why
this accident did not took place in advance! I bookmarked it.

    • Both are really good laptops. If you can afford it, the hardware is better on the Alienware. But I personally prefer the design on the Asus and I would rather have a laptop for gaming with the biggest flaw being it attracts fingerprints than a gaming laptop under 1000 that runs a bit too hot.

I guess it is up to personal option after all. Which laptop are you leaning towards?

  14. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate your efforts and this is exactly what I was looking for. I just wanted to know what the best laptop for the money was and I think I found it.
